Dog Behaviour Consultations – Personalised Help for Problem Behaviour
With over 40 years of professional dog training experience — including 12 years as a specialist dog handler and trainer in the Royal Australian Air Force — I’ve worked with thousands of dogs exhibiting behaviour problems ranging from mild to severe. My in-home dog behaviour consultations are designed to help you understand why your dog behaves the way it does, identify the underlying emotional and psychological causes, and implement realistic, effective strategies that create lasting change.
Many behaviour problems stem from fear, anxiety, insecurity, poor impulse control, or over-arousal — not just disobedience. That’s why obedience training alone is often not enough. While I offer obedience training to the highest standard, true behaviour rehabilitation requires a deeper understanding of your dog’s emotional state and how they interact with their environment and family.
Whether you're dealing with fear-based avoidance, hyper-excitability, aggression, or more subtle signs of emotional imbalance, I offer clear, practical support that restores calm, trust, and balance in the home.
Areas I Specialise In
I offer in-home consultations to address a wide range of behavioural concerns, including but not limited to:
Dog Aggression and Reactivity
- Reactivity towards other dogs on-lead, behind fences, or in close proximity
- Aggression towards people, including guests, strangers, or family members
- Resource guarding (food, toys, space)
- Intra-household dog aggression
Aggressive or reactive behaviour can be triggered by fear, anxiety, insecurity, trauma, or lack of structure. I assess each case individually and create a tailored rehabilitation plan focused on building emotional stability, impulse control, and mutual trust.
Lead Pulling and Walking Issues
- Constant pulling on the lead
- Lunging at dogs, people, or vehicles
- Avoidance behaviours or refusal to walk
- Excessive anxiety or overstimulation on walks
Walks should be calm, focused, and enjoyable for both you and your dog. I help you establish calm leash behaviour and guide your dog to walk in control without anxiety or overstimulation.
Toilet Training Problems
- Accidents inside the home
- Scent marking
- Anxiety-related toileting
Whether it’s a puppy or an adopted adult dog, I help you create consistent routines and identify emotional or environmental triggers affecting toileting behaviour.
Separation Anxiety and Destructive Behaviour
- Excessive barking, whining, or howling when alone
- Chewing furniture or destroying items
- Escape attempts or self-harming behaviours
Separation-related behaviours are often rooted in fear and emotional dependency. I help your dog build confidence and resilience while teaching you how to create a calmer, more secure home environment.
Jumping, Mouthing, and Hyperactive Behaviour
- Jumping up on people or guests
- Play-biting or mouthing
- Over-excitement, hyper-arousal, or inability to settle
- Pushy, demanding, or controlling behaviour
- Inappropriate attention-seeking or frustration outbursts
Many of these behaviours are symptoms of poor impulse control, over-arousal, or emotional instability. I teach your dog how to regulate their energy, respect personal space, and settle calmly even in stimulating environments.
A powerful part of this process is teaching your dog to go to a designated "place" and remain there until released. This simple but highly effective exercise helps your dog learn self-control, composure, and how to calm down when overstimulated.
Excessive Barking
- Territorial barking
- Frustration-based barking
- Boredom or anxiety-driven vocalisation
I identify the emotional source of excessive barking and show you how to address it without shutting down your dog’s natural communication.
Lack of Obedience or Impulse Control
- Poor recall or disobedience
- Inability to settle or respond to commands
- Overstimulation and lack of focus
Obedience means little if your dog is in an emotionally unstable state. I help condition real-world obedience through calmness, clarity, and consequence — not bribery or overstimulation — so your dog listens under all conditions, not just when it suits them.
My Approach
Every dog is different — and so is every household. That’s why I don’t offer generic advice or one-size-fits-all programs. I observe your dog in its natural environment, evaluate behavioural triggers, and create a tailored plan that reflects your dog’s history, temperament, and emotional needs.
I use a calm, structured, and balanced approach. I do not rely on excessive food bribery or methods that overstimulate dogs into compliance. Instead, I focus on:
- Establishing clear rules, boundaries, and structure
- Teaching respect for personal and social space
- Reducing emotional instability, anxiety, and hyper-arousal
- Rebuilding trust, focus, and calm responsiveness
- Helping owners lead fairly, consistently, and confidently
